If you’re an ardent deal hunter – or simply someone with a pulse who intends to purchase holiday presents – you know that Black Friday is the day save on televisions, toys and other high-tech gadgets.
But, amid the onslaught of sales on fashion and electronics will be enticing opportunities to flee, because the biggest shopping day of the year – and its sister holidays, Cyber Monday and Travel Tuesday – is also a great time to book bargain-priced trips to the tropics and big-city respites at rock-bottom prices.
“The good news is that like most things on the internet, all different types of travel deals will typically see massive discounts during the week of Black Friday and Cyber Monday,” says Will Lardinois, travel editor at money-saving website DealNews.com.
Lardinois says we can expect to see travel deals of all types during the holiday season. There will be a bumper crop of Black Friday-linked special buys on hotel stays, train tickets, oversees adventures, theme park passes and more.
Some Black Friday travel offers are trickling out but many deals have yet to drop. But, based on data from previous years, Lardinois expects Black Friday airfare discounts to be the most prominent.
“The strongest discounts and/or coupons we’ve seen have traditionally been on airfare deals,” Lardinois says. “The great news about this is they usually last throughout the week or weekend of Black Friday.”
The experts at DealNews anticipate one-way airfares to cost as little as $19 around Black Friday. Those cheap fares are likely to come from airlines such as Frontier, but bigger carriers like Southwest Airlines will also have deeply discounted fares. In Black Friday 2018, they dropped some one-way flights to $49. If you wait until Travel Deal Tuesday, Dec. 3, you can expect to see up to 40 percent off airfare.
You will definitely see a flurry of deals on hotel stays.
“While specific hotel chains often have Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, I’d tend to say that the absolute best coupons for hotels (and hotel/airfare bundles) tend to come from the largest OTAs, such as Expedia,” Lardinois points out. “However, there’s a major caveat — these coupons (especially from Expedia) are usually extremely limited in number of uses. Very much a ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ type of ordeal for the absolute best of the deals.”
If you’d rather hit the high seas, it’s possible to save some coin on cruises, but Lardinois says better discounts typically pop up during the “wave season” — that is, January through mid-to-late March. It’s “the period when most cruise lines try to fill out their summer sailings with deep discounts,” he explains.
Whether you’re hoping to save money on a flight to Florida or a far-flung adventure oversees, flexibility is key to hooking the hottest deals. Research, shop various sources, be open minded about your dates and destinations and be ready to pounce.
