Foreign holidays will be a step closer when UK air bridges are announced, which could be as soon as Monday.

The Telegraph understands the first of these bilateral travel agreements – which would  circumvent quarantine – will be with Portugal, Greece, Spain, Bermuda, Gibraltar and the Canary Islands. Demand for overseas trips could spike once details are confirmed.

As it stands, the Foreign Office (FCO) advises against all but essential travel, so travelling abroad would invalidate travel insurance.

Meanwhile, the UK Government’s quarantine measures require all arrivals to the country, including returning Britons, to self-isolate for 14 days.

But FCO advice is expected to change once air bridges are announced, and quarantine should be waived for those visiting countries with which the UK has secured a travel corridor.

By Monday, Britons should have a clearer idea on where they can travel this summer. However, this does not necessarily mean that prices for holidays and flights will go up.

Industry leaders and experts told Telegraph Travel while demand will increase for holidays when travel restrictions are lifted, prices could broadly remain the same.

“The UK travel market is incredibly competitive and offers extremely good value for money, prices are generally governed by supply and demand,” said a spokesperson for ABTA, the UK travel trade association for tour operators and travel agents.

“Hotels, airlines and tour operators will set their prices to encourage sales and will be preparing now to tap into a rush of bookings expected once travel restrictions are lifted,” they added.
