New Acela Trains Start Testing Prior to 2021 Fleet Entry: Business Travel News

Next week, Amtrak will begin a nine-month test of 28 new trains that it plans to use for Acela service on Northeast Corridor routes next year.

The new trains will increase passenger capacity by 25 percent and will have better Wi-Fi access, outlets and USB ports, according to Amtrak. The trains also use 40 percent less energy per customer than current trains and will have “sustainable components” such as recycled leather used for seating.

Amtrak reported that Acela ridership increased 4.3 percent year over year to 3.5 million customers in the 2019 fiscal year. In December, ridership was up 16 percent year over year.
